Suburbs

The suburbs of Memphis are nestled in Shelby County, and offer a wide variety of lifestyles for young families, empty nesters and single professionals alike, from the farmer's markets and small-town charm of Germantown to upscale and walkable waterfront living in Lakeland.

The Memphis suburbs are a great choice for those who want plenty of open spaces and green grass right in their backyards, but also quick access to the city’s distinctive arts scene, culture and nightlife. In fact, the average one-way commute from Shelby County to Downtown Memphis clocks in at less than 30 minutes. Many St. Jude colleagues have planted roots in suburbs across the region—Cordova, directly east of the city, Collierville and Germantown to the southeast and Lakeland in the northeast, as well as Bartlett and Millington to the north. Interstates and beltways take commuters by car into the city, while buses, bike routes, and rideshares offer alternative transportation.

There’s diversity, lots of places to eat, recreational activities and of course the distinct cultural attractions here. When you’re out and about in Memphis, there’s always an opportunity to connect with friends and meet new people.
