Uptown’s revitalization effort has long been in the making, since the late 1990s, when the Memphis Housing Authority and the City of Memphis were able to secure a grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant allowed Uptown to create an economically integrated community that included the construction of mixed-income apartment complexes, while adding infrastructure and amenities designed to attract small businesses and create a prosperous future for the town’s residents. This development has largely paid off, turning Uptown into a family-friendly neighborhood with a thriving culture that includes bike lanes, a few small parks and community centers, as well as hip cafes like Cafe Keough and Crazy Gander Coffee Company. Today, Uptown continues its boom town era with the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital expansion, and the development of Snuff District, a 60-acre site that, once open, will feature brand new offices, apartments, and restaurants to service a growing population of young families who are moving here to raise their children.
