COMING TO ST. JUDE

St. Jude is a household name in Lebanon where I’m from, largely due to the hospital’s partnership with the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon (CCCL) at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. I always knew that St. Jude is a destination for medical care for pediatric cancers and that it is sought by patients from all over the world. St. Jude Global efforts in bringing health care to children in underdeveloped regions also is often reported in the news.

With my expertise in genomics and bioinformatics, I felt I could contribute meaningfully to the St. Jude mission of advancing cures, and the opportunity to work here would also allow me to grow professionally and personally in a dynamic, cutting-edge environment.

Since joining St. Jude in 2022, I have found my professional home in the Department of Pathology. It is a unique environment, seamlessly integrating both research and clinical work. St. Jude is truly a one-of-a-kind place to work. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities for learning and growth. It brings me immense satisfaction to know that my work contributes to a deeper understanding of disease and plays a role in the development of future treatments, therapies, and cures.

I also deeply appreciate how St. Jude drives its employees toward excellence while supporting their personal and professional development. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting several Lebanese colleagues, as well as Americans of Lebanese descent. In fact, there’s a monthly, informal Lebanese lunch on campus where we gather, schedule permitting, to connect and catch up.

The Pathology department’s leadership is equally remarkable, creating an environment where innovation is encouraged, and every team member feels valued and supported in their efforts to make a difference.

ENJOYING LIFE IN MEMPHIS

I enjoy the proximity of things in the downtown area. I could be at FedExForum watching the Grizzlies or watching a play at the Orpheum Theatre, and afterward walking to the South Main area for a drink either at Bar Hustle in the Arrive Hotel or at Earnestine and Hazel’s.

I recently joined a friendly five-aside football (soccer) game that colleagues in the Chemical Biology and Therapeutics and Structural Biology departments at St. Jude have organized every two weeks. It is a fun opportunity to be physically active.

I also am determined to ride the bus in Memphis if I am going somewhere on the bus route. It’s another way of interacting with the city while reducing my carbon footprint.

MY MEMPHIS FAVORITES

What are some of your favorite establishments to visit? I enjoy Westy’s in the Pinch District or Grind City Brewery for happy hour.

What is something unique about Memphis that you enjoy? I also enjoy going to the Hu Hotel rooftop because I think it has the best view of the city and the Mississippi River.
