COMING TO ST. JUDE

St. Jude has always been a part of my life. In 1988, my older brother, Trey, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at 19 months old. He received two and a half years of chemotherapy treatment and is now 38 years old, considered cured. Today, he remains part of the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study. While I was too young to remember much from those early years, my family’s stories—and Trey’s strength—have deeply influenced who I am.

I owe so much to St. Jude. Every day, I am reminded of the invaluable, lifesaving treatment that made my family what it is today.

Strategic Communication, Education, and Outreach

St. Jude used to have a video library where patient families could check out movies. That eventually led to Trey’s love of movies. We both became big movie buffs, and that passion eventually shaped my career path. In January 2025, I was hired as a videographer for Internal Communication within Strategic Communication, Education and Outreach (SCEO). My job is to help communicate important messages across St. Jude—everything from event updates and leadership messages to employee stories.

My brother is not the only former St. Jude patient and survivor in my family. My stepson, Augustus (Gus), was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in June 2018 and has Down syndrome. When my wife and Gus came into my life, I already knew what it was like to have a loved one as a St. Jude patient, so our connection was meant to be. He received chemotherapy treatments for nine months and has been in remission for five years. Gus is now a thriving, joyful kid.

In addition, my stepsister, Indiana, was treated at St. Jude after an AML diagnosis. Indiana is originally from the Dominican Republic, and she and her parents came to Memphis because of St. Jude and the hope it promised. She underwent a bone marrow transplant and several years of chemotherapy. Because of this treatment, Indiana has been in remission for more than 20 years and still calls Memphis her home.

I owe so much to St. Jude. Every day, I am reminded of the invaluable, lifesaving treatment that made my family what it is today. In a way, it doesn’t feel like it’s my story, but theirs. It’s because of my family that I found my way here and now I’m giving back to the place that gave so much to us. I am proud to be part of the St. Jude mission and continue my family’s journey.

MY MEMPHIS FAVORITES

Where is your favorite place to enjoy a meal with your family? My wife and I love a date night at Sekisui Pacific Rim for some good sushi.

What’s your favorite outdoor activity in Memphis? We love going to live music at places like Slider Inn Downtown and the Overton Park Shell free concert series.

Where in Memphis do you go to relax? I enjoy the breweries around town with outdoor seating, especially Wiseacre and Crosstown Brewing.

GIVING BACK TO MEMPHIS

I’m also proud to be born and raised in Memphis—a city that, like St. Jude, has shaped me. There’s something uniquely special about Memphis. My family and I love experiencing all the city has to offer, from catching movies at the Malco Paradiso to making a stop at Jerry’s Sno Cones.

We enjoy local favorites like Las Delicias and RP Tracks and frequent fun spots like the Cordova Skating Center and Main Event. Community events like the RiverBeat Music Festival and Memphis Redbirds baseball games bring us together and highlight the vibrant culture here.

I see a lot of potential for the city of Memphis. The people of this city are so optimistic, and the sense of community you feel is unlike any other city.

I’ve been able to see the incredible growth and expansion over the years, alongside St. Jude, and how the city has become more connected than ever. There’s a place for everyone here—and I’m proud to call it home.
